Anatomy of a Spray Foam Rig
A spray foam rig consists of several integrated systems. Understanding what each component does and how it relates to the others is the foundation for evaluating rig quality and diagnosing problems.
The proportioner (machine): Heats A-side and B-side chemicals to processing temperature, pressurizes them, and pumps them through the heated hose to the spray gun at the correct ratio. This is the core spray component.
The generator: Powers the machine's heater package and all electrical systems on the rig. Must be sized above the machine's maximum electrical demand to maintain stable heater performance.
The compressor: Supplies compressed air to the proportioner, transfer pumps, spray gun, and other pneumatic tools. Must supply adequate CFM and pressure simultaneously to all demands.
The refrigerated air dryer: Removes moisture from the compressed air supply. Moisture in the air system causes proportioner problems, gun problems, and foam quality issues.
The heated hose system: Maintains chemical temperature from the machine to the spray gun across the full hose length. Temperature is maintained by electrical heating elements embedded in the hose, powered by the machine.
Transfer pumps: Pump chemical from the drums to the proportioner intake. May be air-driven or electric.
Drum racks and handling: Support the chemical drums at proper height and position for transfer pump operation. Desiccant drum dryers remove moisture from the space above the chemical in the drum.
The workstation: Counter, cabinet storage, bench vise, flush pot. Provides workspace for gun maintenance and material management.
Safety systems: Supplied breathing air, PPE station, eyewash, fire extinguisher, first aid.
Engine compartment: The generator and compressor engines are isolated from the spray processing area in a ventilated forward compartment accessed from outside the trailer.
