Key Differences Between Polyurea and Spray Foam Systems
Material Behavior
Expanding material that relies on volume and reaction to create insulation. Expansion helps fill voids and can compensate for minor variations in processing conditions.
Non-expanding film that builds to a specific thickness. Performance depends entirely on how the material is processed and applied.
Pressure and Flow
Lower pressure, volume-driven. More tolerant of variation in system performance.
Higher pressure, film-build driven. Requires tighter control of material flow to maintain proper thickness and surface quality.
Temperature Requirements
Heat controls reaction and expansion, but generally forgiving when conditions fluctuate.
Requires consistent and stable temperature throughout entire system. Variations affect reactivity, spray pattern, and final coating performance.
Material Conditioning
Standard material supply with basic temperature control.
Active conditioning required: drum temperature maintenance, mixing when required, system circulation to stabilize temperature and pressure before spraying.
Recirculation
Basic recirculation for startup and temperature stabilization.
Full-system recirculation maintaining consistent conditions across proportioner, hose, and return lines.
System Sensitivity
More forgiving due to material expansion and tolerance to minor system variation.
Less forgiving. No expansion means any inconsistency in pressure, temperature, or flow directly affects coating thickness and performance.
