Spray Foam Yield and Board Foot Calculations
Board feet is the standard unit for measuring spray foam material volume. Understanding board foot calculations allows contractors to estimate material requirements, cost, and pricing for any job.
What is a board foot? One board foot of spray foam = 1 square foot of coverage at 1 inch of thickness.
Board foot formula: Board feet = square footage × thickness (in inches)
Example: 1,000 sq ft at 3" thickness = 3,000 board feet
- Material yield:
- Spray foam is sold in sets (one drum of A-side + one drum of B-side). Each set yields a certain number of board feet:
- Closed-cell foam: approximately 4,000–4,500 board feet per set
- Open-cell foam: approximately 15,000–19,000 board feet per set
Sets required: Sets needed = total board feet ÷ yield per set
Example: 3,000 board feet closed-cell ÷ 4,200 bf/set (average) = approximately 0.71 sets
Add 10–15% overage for waste, transitions, and surface variation.
Material cost estimate: Sets needed × cost per set = approximate material cost
Yield values vary by product formulation, application conditions, and operator technique. Always use product-specific yield data from the chemical manufacturer for accurate estimating.
