How Spray Foam Contractors Price Jobs

Spray foam job pricing requires understanding material costs, labor costs, overhead, and market rates. Contractors who understand their costs price jobs profitably. Contractors who estimate loosely undercharge and erode their margins.

Material cost calculation: Use the SprayWorks Yield Calculator to estimate board feet required and material sets needed for any job. Material cost = number of sets × cost per set.

Labor cost: A two-person crew (sprayer + helper) with standard wages and burden (taxes, insurance) typically costs $600–$1,200 per day depending on market and crew experience.

Overhead allocation: Overhead includes rig payment or depreciation, fuel, insurance, equipment maintenance, and general business costs. Allocating overhead per job keeps pricing accurate.

  • Market pricing:
  • Spray foam insulation is priced by the board foot or square foot in most markets. Regional pricing varies significantly. Research your local market rates by type:
  • Open-cell: $0.35–$0.65/board foot installed
  • Closed-cell: $0.90–$1.80/board foot installed

Markup approach: Many spray foam contractors use a markup multiplier on material cost as a simplified pricing approach. A 2–2.5× material cost multiplier captures labor, overhead, and margin for most residential applications.

Quoting by R-value: Increasingly, spray foam is quoted by R-value target rather than by arbitrary thickness. Understand your product's R-value per inch and price to the R-value the customer needs.
