Spray Foam Rigs Are Mobile Polyurethane Manufacturing Systems

Spray polyurethane foam is not a product shipped to a jobsite and applied like paint. It is manufactured on-site, at the point of application, by the contractor operating the spray equipment.

The two liquid components — isocyanate (A-side) and polyol resin blend (B-side) — are separate chemicals until they meet at the spray gun. The chemical reaction that creates polyurethane foam occurs at the gun tip. Everything that happens before that moment — heating, pressurizing, pumping, transporting through the hose — determines whether the foam that comes out meets specification.

This means the spray foam rig is a mobile manufacturing system. It must maintain:

Chemical temperature — from the drum, through the transfer system, through the proportioner heater blocks, and through the heated hose to the gun. Temperature drop at any point in this chain affects foam quality.

Chemical pressure balance — A-side and B-side must be delivered to the gun at equal pressure. Pressure imbalance causes off-ratio foam that may not cure correctly or meet density and R-value specifications.

Material ratio accuracy — The proportioner must deliver A-side and B-side at the correct volumetric ratio specified by the chemical manufacturer. Off-ratio foam is a defective product.

Chemical cleanliness — Moisture contamination in the air system, temperature spikes from an undersized heater, or crystallized isocyanate from inadequate recirculation all affect the chemistry at the gun.

Contractors are not just applying insulation. They are manufacturing it. The quality of the manufacturing platform — the rig — directly determines the quality of what gets installed.
