Chemical Drum Handling Systems

Chemical drum handling is a practical engineering consideration that affects daily production efficiency, safety, and chemical conditioning quality.

Drum racks: Drums are typically supported on racks or stands that position them at the correct height for transfer pump suction and allow proper ventilation. Racks should be stable and allow drums to be positioned and removed without excessive handling.

Drum dolly: Moving full chemical drums (typically 450–480 lb each for closed-cell foam) requires a drum dolly. Most spray foam rigs include a drum dolly for this purpose.

Desiccant drum dryers: Isocyanate (A-side) is hygroscopic — it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Moisture in the drum accelerates chemical degradation and can cause problems at the gun. Desiccant drum dryers attach to the drum bungs and filter moisture out of air entering the drum as material is pumped out. These are standard equipment on production rigs.

Spill containment: Drum positions and chemical handling areas should include spill containment to manage leaks and spills without contaminating the trailer floor or the environment.

Temperature considerations: Chemical drums should be stored and conditioned at manufacturer-recommended processing temperatures (typically 70–80°F). In cold weather, drums stored overnight in unheated trailers will drop below processing temperature. Shore power-connected wall heaters or drum heaters are used to maintain chemical temperature.

Logan Manifold: For contractors who spray both open-cell and closed-cell materials, a Logan Manifold System allows switching between material types with an air purge back-to-drum. This avoids cross-contamination and reduces chemical waste.
