Air drying is a critical function in spray foam rig operation that is often undervalued during equipment evaluation. The quality of compressed air — specifically its moisture content — directly affects rig performance and foam quality.
Why moisture is a problem: Compressed air contains moisture that condenses as the air cools in the distribution system. Moisture entering the proportioner can cause corrosion of internal components, contamination of chemical at the pump, and premature packing wear. Moisture entering the gun can cause chemical contamination and foam quality problems. Moisture entering desiccant drum dryers reduces their effectiveness.
Refrigerated air dryers: A refrigerated dryer cools compressed air to a low temperature (typically 35–40°F dew point), causing moisture to condense and drain out before the air enters the distribution system. This removes the bulk of moisture from the compressed air supply.
Refrigerated dryers are the standard for production spray foam rigs. They operate continuously, require minimal maintenance (filter cleaning), and provide reliable moisture removal across normal operating conditions.
Desiccant air dryers: Desiccant dryers use a desiccant material to adsorb moisture from the air stream, achieving much lower dew points than refrigerated dryers (typically -40°F or lower). They are used in addition to refrigerated dryers in extreme cold-weather operations where even small amounts of moisture can cause problems.
Filter systems: Basic air filtration separates liquid water and particulates from the air stream but does not address water vapor. Filters alone are not adequate for production spray foam applications.
A properly designed air system for a spray foam rig includes a refrigerated dryer as standard equipment — not as an optional upgrade.
